SUMMARY:LinSig3 - Junction Modelling Computer Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Accurate LinSig modelling is fundamental to traffic signal design\, transport assessments for development and detailed studies where traffic signal junctions are a major determinant of transport outcomes. This course covers the use of LinSig 3 to model traffic signal junctions and is essential for LinSig users wishing to ensure robust and correct modelling. It starts from first principles and concentrates on the use of LinSig for modelling single junctions as well as providing a stepping stone to the LinSig Networks and Advanced features workshop. The course is computer based with practical workshop exercises being used throughout. This online course is delivered by a combination of a conference call and a remote computer lab (giving access to LinSig). You will need a good internet connection to participate but will not need to LinSig to be installed on your PC. \nWho should attend. \nThis course is suitable for anyone who uses or will use LinSig for modelling traffic signal junctions and who requires a comprehensive base of knowledge to ensure their modelling is robust and accurate. As well as being suitable for those new to LinSig it is also suitable as a refresher course for those whose LinSig experience may be with previous versions or otherwise out of date. The course is also appropriate for anyone who\, whilst not building models themselves\, are required to authorise or audit models submitted by others. \nPrerequisites. \nDelegates are expected to have a basic understanding of how traffic signals work and know what is meant by terms such as phase\, stage\, intergreen\, saturation flow and capacity. This and much more can be gained by either attending the JCT Introduction to Traffic Signals 2 day course or the one day JCT Essentials of Traffic Signals for Modellers. \nNo prior knowledge or experience of LinSig is required. \nCourse content. \nSince 1985\, LinSig has been the industry standard modelling software for traffic signal design and assessment. This two day workshop is key training for anyone new to LinSig who needs to produce efficient and accurate modelling as part of traffic signal design or transport assessments. \nThe course involves extensive computer usage and covers the following topics: \nDay 1 \nOverview of main LinSig3 features including lane based modelling\, short lane control and blocking\, assignment of flows to lanes and routes\, comprehensive modelling of traffic signal controllers\, pedestrian links\, flows\, delays and crossing times.\nBuilding a LinSig3 model on a suggested step by step basis including explanations of LinSig3 features in the context of building an actual model.  This includes the use of the many different data and results display options in LinSig.\nRunning LinSig3 models and interpreting the results.  This includes input of signal timings using timing dials or optimisation.  The detailed lane based results are explained and an overview is given of the report builder and print out options.\nModelling give-way left turns and opposed right turns\, including a full appreciation of the components of right turn capacity dependent on the selected stage sequence.\nUse of flow group formulae and component flow groups for the efficient modelling of multiple traffic scenarios in transport assessments. \nDay 2 \nHandling more complicated signal sequences with optimisation of interstage periods using phase delays\, and interaction with phase minimum greens.Certain limitations of controllers as addressed by LinSig3 are illustrated and explained.\nOpposed right turn blocking of lanes shared with vehicles going straight on.  This includes use of LinSig3 delay based assignment to predict lane choice by drivers going straight on who might risk being blocked in the outside lane.\nUnderstanding Cyclic Flow profiles in the context of a complicated double junction and applying cruise times\, platoon dispersion and platoon compression.\nModel auditing and an introduction to the Transport for London LinSig Model Audit Process (LMAP).\nUsing more advanced features such as multiple flares and converting LinSig2 files to LinSig3. \nAccreditation. \nAll JCT courses are Approved or are pending Approval by the Institute of Highway Engineers and attendance is therefore recognised by the IHE and many other bodies as evidence of Continual Professional Development (CPD). \nCourses are managed under a ISO9001 Quality Management System.
