Software Support

Since its original release in 1985, LinSig has been the UK industry standard software for the assessment and design of traffic signal junctions.

LinSig 3’s unique combination of both traffic and controller modelling aids in comprehensive traffic signal design. The software has been instrumental in advancing UK phase (signal group) based methods of control giving maximum safety and efficiency for all road users.

One common application of LinSig is rapid testing of new traffic signal schemes which involve large numbers of alternative options.

LinSig allows different options to be quickly modelled and rejected or taken forward possibly to more detailed resource intensive modelling such as microsimulation.

Other common uses of the software include the interactive design of signalled roundabouts for which it is strongly established in the UK and overseas, transport assessments for land development and detailed modelling of networks of signal, priority and roundabout junctions.

Key Features

LinSig 3 contains a sophisticated Controller Model based on the UK TOPAS 2500 specification capable of modelling multiple stage streams. The software can model multiple controllers within a Network which can be coordinated or have different cycle times.

Our traffic model models the detailed behaviour of traffic on each lane providing predictions of capacity, delay and queuing. LinSig 3 includes a radically improved more flexible model than previous versions and removes the requirement to group lanes into links allowing independent control of short lanes and automatic modelling of short lane blocking.

LinSig's traffic model can model both single junctions and networks. When used to model a network coordination between junctions is modelled in detail. LinSig will typically model networks of up to 10-15 junctions using a highly detailed matrix based approach and upto 20-25 junctions using a lane-based flows approach.

LinSig provides two alternative methods of entering traffic flows. The more detailed matrix based method allows flows to be defined as a network wide origin-destination matrix with the ability to model rerouting due to changes in delays in the network and highly detailed modelling of traffic signal coordination. Lane based flows provides a simpler option which allows flows to be entered lane by lane without the requirement for an OD matrix but is potentially less accurate and cannot model routing effects.

LinSig uses traffic turning counts to estimate a network origin-destination matrix. Turning counts can managed graphically which allows poor quality counts or consistency errors to be quickly located and rectified.

LinSig includes a particularly sophisticated right turn model which allows the operation of right turns, whether opposed, unopposed or a combination, to be modelled in considerable detail. Right turn capacity is often a crucial determinant of overall junction capacity and it is important to correctly model all of the subtle aspects of a right turn.

Separate modelling of bus traffic allows signal timings to be optimised taking into account custom bus cruise and stopping times. Separate delay and journey time outputs are available for buses.

LinSig includes a model audit view which as well as allowing key model information to be viewed in a common format in one place allows different LinSig scenarios or files to be compared and differences highlighted.

Except when LinSig's more sophisticated modelling options are used, LinSig can produce numerically equivalent results to TRANSYT PDM models for the same signal times. This allows comparison and validation against existing modelling work before optionally going on to use LinSig's advanced features to improve the model.

LinSig can optionally model pedestrian delays and linking through each junction. LinSig also models control related pedestrian issues in its controller model.

A Signal Optimiser which optimises traffic signal stage/phase durations taking into account constraints of the control mechanism. The optimiser can optimise junctions individually or over the whole network.

Traffic Flow data can be defined using an Origin-Destination matrix and assigned automatically to Routes through the junction or network. LinSig 3 includes a sophisticated assignment method based on user equilibrium assignment as used in larger strategic transportation models

Pricing & Ordering

We base our pricing on the size of the licence required and whether any multi-site discounts apply, with the per-install cost decreasing with larger licences. New LinSig 3 licences include 12 months of Software Support free of charge, provided a LinSig 3 Software Support Agreement is signed at the time of purchase. At the expiry of the free Software Support, paid support is available.

    Software Support

Software Support is included free of charge for the first 12 month after purchasing a new LinSig Licence, provided a Software Support Agreement is instated.

Shortly before any free period of support expires you will receive an option to cancel your Software Support Agreement. If you decide to continue software support the following prices will apply annually:

    Site Size Annual Renewal Price
Single PC Site Licence (1PC) £395.00+VAT
    Two-to-Four PC Site Licence (2-4PC) £445.00+VAT
    Five-to-Ten PC Site Licence (5-10PC) £495.00+VAT
Network Site Licence (one local network at a single Office, any number of PCs) £545.00+VAT

    Corporate Support Agreements

If your organisation owns a number of site licences, you may be interested in a Corporate Software Support Agreement.

This allows you to have one Support Agreement covering all Office Sites within your organisation for the same product, at discounted rates. It also avoids the need to renew separate agreements for each Site as and when they expire and ensures that all Sites within your organisation have the same access to Software Support.

All Sites within an organisation must be included within the Agreement. If you would like to change to a Corporate Support Agreement or would like any more information, please contact us for a quotation.

    Renewing or Cancelling Software Support

Our Software Support Agreements are continuous agreements. This means that at renewal time the following procedure is used:

    • Prior to renewal you will be reminded of your right to cancel the Support Agreement.
    • If you wish to continue with Software Support simply do nothing and your Support Agreement will renewed for another year and you will be invoiced for the appropriate amount. If your organisation uses Purchase Orders you may need to organise a Purchase Order for Support to ensure your accounts department pays the Software Support invoice on time avoiding any breaks in availability of Support.
    • If you wish to cancel Support tell us in writing that you wish to cancel prior to the renewal date and we will cancel your support agreement and you will not be charged.

    Recommencing Support after a Break

To recommence Support again after a period without Support, there is a £150 + VAT surcharge on the Support Renewal prices as listed above.
n.b. You cannot recommence Support on an old Version after a new Version has been announced.
